  • January 18, 2013: Legislative leadership, women’s groups to mark 40th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade by announcing legislation to improve abortion access
    Speakers from the State Senate and Assembly will join the California Women’s Health Alliance, a coalition of women’s health and rights groups, at a press conference commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Roe. We will announce the introduction that day of legislation, authored by Assembly member Toni Atkins (D-San Diego), which improves abortion access. This is one of several bills that spotlight California’s ongoing leadership in its promotion and protection of reproductive rights and health at a time when state after state in the nation is moving to restrict access.

    SACRAMENTO – Getting birth control will be a lot easier for thousands of California women when new legislation improving access becomes effective Jan. 1.

  • September 23, 2012: Governor Brown Signs Comprehensive Reproductive Health Access Bill – SB 623
    Several of the state’s leading reproductive rights groups applauded Governor Brown for signing SB 623, an important bill authored by Senator Christine Kehoe (D-San Diego) that will allow the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), to continue evaluating the safety, effectiveness and satisfaction rates of early abortions performed by nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, and physician assistants under a statewide pilot project.

  • September 22, 2012: ‘Thank you Gov. Brown’ - Governor signs bill improving access to birth control for thousands of California women
    LOS ANGELES – Governor Jerry Brown, surrounded by women leaders from throughout California, signed legislation that would increase timely access to birth control for thousands of California women. AB 2348 was part of a package of bills signed by Gov. Brown that improved women’s health care.

  • August 27, 2012: Legislature sends governor bill to improve birth control access in state
    SACRAMENTO – The California Legislature delivered a bill to the governor’s desk today that would improve access to birth control for thousands of California women. AB 2348, authored by Assembly member Holly Mitchell (D-Los Angeles) allows registered nurses (RNs) to dispense hormonal contraceptives such as the pill, patch and ring.

  • August 22, 2012: Thank You Senators - Senate votes to improve access to Birth Control
    SACRAMENTO -- The California State Senate voted to improve access to birth control for thousands of women in California by passing AB 2348 today on a vote of 23-15. Authored by Assembly member Holly Mitchell (D-Los Angeles), AB 2348, the Access to Birth Control Bill, allows registered nurses to dispense hormonal contraceptives such as the pill, patches and rings.

  • August 1, 2012: August 1 Marks Step Forward for Women’s Health with Affordable Care Act Preventive Health Rules – CA has Opportunity to Go a Step Further with AB 2348!
    August 1 marks the day when under the Affordable Care Act (passed by Congress and signed by President Obama) women can begin to access birth control and other preventive health services without co-pays or deductibles! Access to birth control is an essential health care service for women. If you are covered by private insurance, you may now be eligible for free birth control and preventive health services such as cervical cancer screening, STI testing, HIV testing, and breastfeeding counseling and supplies.

  • July 3, 2012: Key Senate Committee Supports Increasing Access to Birth Control
    Lawmakers in Senate Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee voted 6-2 to pass AB 2348 (Mitchell) – the Access to Birth Control Bill. The bill is expected move to the Senate Floor in August.

  • June 28, 2012: Victory for Women and Families today as Supreme Court rules to uphold the Affordable Care Act!
    Because of today’s ruling upholding the Affordable Care Act, millions of women will have access to preventive health care with no co-pay, including cancer screenings, mammograms, prenatal care and birth control, starting in August 2012 – protecting their health and saving them money.

  • June 21, 2012: Thank You Ads
    Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC) ran ads in three newspapers this morning thanking Speaker John A. Pérez, Assembly member Holly Mitchell and the members of the California State Assembly who stood with Planned Parenthood and voted yes on our Access to Birth Control Bill, AB 2348 (Mitchell).

  • June 20, 2012: SEIU joins growing list of health groups supporting access to birth control
    The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) has joined the growing number of health care organizations supporting the Access to Birth Control Bill, AB 2348 (Mitchell). SEIU California, which represents more than 35,000 nurses in California, said it supports the legislation "because it would increase access to women's health care, helps our members and all people of California."

  • June 7, 2012: Alexandra Filimonov: Allow registered nurses to dispense hormonal birth control
    "Nearly every day at the Planned Parenthood Mar Monte health center in Hayward, where I work as a nurse practitioner, there are patients lined up out the door. This is often true at health centers in Silicon Valley and, especially, in California's Central Valley. The acute shortage of physicians serving community clinics means that many people have to wait weeks or months for basic services and medications -- and contraceptives are at the top of that list."

  • June 7, 2012: Birth Control and Women’s Health – 47 Years of Legal Access to Contraception
    Today marks the 47th anniversary of Griswold v. Connecticut, the 1965 Supreme Court decision legalizing the use of contraception by married couples in all 50 states and ushering in a generation of healthy, empowered women and families. Ninety-nine percent of sexually active women have used birth control at some point in their lives.

  • May 31, 2012: California Assembly Votes to Increase Access to Birth Control
    SACRAMENTO --This morning the California State Assembly voted to pass AB 2348 (Mitchell) – the Access to Birth Control Bill –with 43 Assembly members voting in favor of the measure, 28 voting against and 9 members not voting. The bill is expected to move to the Senate Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee.

  • April 30, 2012: May 1 -- Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California Capitol Day
    Hundreds of Planned Parenthood activists will rally at the State Capitol in support of increasing reproductive health services and in support of the wide range of preventive health care services provided by Planned Parenthood health centers.

  • April 25, 2012: State Senate Committee Passes SB 1338 to Expand Reproductive Healthcare
    The California State Senate Public Safety Committee passed SB 1338, the Safe and Early Access bill in a 5-2 vote April 24. SB 1338, authored by Senator Christine Kehoe, would ensure women receive safe and early access to reproductive care by authorizing specially trained nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, and physician assistants to perform early, safe abortions within the terms of their licenses.

  • April 25, 2012: Access to Birth Control Bill Clears First Hurdle
    Statements by Kathy Kneer and Julie Rabinovitz on the passage of AB 2348, the Access to Birth Control bill, out of the Assembly Business, Professions and Consumer Protection Committee on April 24. The bill will now move to the Assembly Rules Committee where it must clear before heading to the Assembly Floor.

  • April 20, 2012: Planned Parenthood radio ads call on legislators to support reproductive health care access!!
    Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California launched a radio campaign today urging legislators to Stand with Planned Parenthood and vote yes on legislation that would improve access to reproductive health care for thousands of women across the state. Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California is sponsoring two common-sense bills, AB 2348 (Mitchell) and SB 1338 (Kehoe) that would increase access to birth control and to comprehensive reproductive health care in local communities.

  • April 18, 2012: Common-sense legislation -- AB 2348 (Mitchell) and SB 1338 (Kehoe) - Planned Parenthood moves to improve access to reproductive health care
