Assembly Bill 2348 (Mitchell) increases timely access to birth control in California by authorizing registered nurses (RNs) to dispense hormonal contraceptives such as the pill, patch and ring under a standardized procedure. As of January 1, 2013, women will not have to wait to see a doctor or advanced clinician to get birth control. Instead, RNs will be able to provide hormonal birth control to patients after taking a routine health assessment.
Senate Bill 623 (Kehoe) will allow the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), to continue evaluating the safety, effectiveness and satisfaction rates of early abortions performed by nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, and physician assistants under a statewide pilot project.
Supporters of AB 2348 include Planned Parenthood, the California Family Health Council, American Nurses Association- California, and Physicians for Reproductive Choice. Supporters of SB 623 include the American Civil Liberties Union of California, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, ACCESS Women’s Health Justice, NARAL Pro-Choice California and California Latinas for Reproductive Justice.
